Experience in the space segment embraces many areas of application: control centres, inflight satellite navigation software, ground segment systems to acquire, process and archive earth observation data, multi-mission user services providing access to various mission catalogues.

Excellent technology, quality and reliability, obtained through strictly controlled production processes are the characteristic features of the systems developed by Elsag Datamat for Defence applications, drawing on in-depth knowledge about rapidly transforming operating scenarios to provide a response to new mission requirements in distant theatres and as part of dynamic alliances.
Combat management
Elsag Datamat develops sensor and weapon control systems, decision support tools and ergonomic operator interfaces for both naval and avionic applications. The company is also developing Combat Management systems for the main Italian Navy platforms, including the new generation anti-aircraft frigate (the Orizzonte Italian-French joint programme) and the new Cavour aircraft carrier. Elsag Datamat has also gained consolidated experience in the framework of Tactical Data Links (Link-11, Link-16, Link-22) for the Italian Navy.
Mission planning
Elsag Datamat is responsible for the development of the Italian Air Force Mission Support System (IAF-MSS), initially conceived to provide mission planning for the Tornado and AMX aircraft, and then extended to support C130J, MB339 and C27J aircraft. Mission Planning Systems can also be used to plan Stand Off Missile delivery, and the IAF-MSS currently provides full support for Storm Shadow missile planning.
Logistics
Elsag Datamat has an outstanding track record delivering Logistic Management Information systems and services to Italian Forces. The main activities include logistics services for the Eurofighter 2000 operated by the Italian Air Force, the Italian Army Information Management System (SIGE) and the Italian Navy Integrated Information Logistics System (SLIM). Elsag Datamat also contributes to Autonomic Logistics activities in the framework of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) programme.
Simulation and training
Elsag Datamat's main activities and references in simulation and training systems include the Action Speed Tactical Trainer (ASTT) developed for the Italian Navy training centre in Taranto, the Autonomous Aircraft Manoeuvre Instrumentation (AACMI) for the inflight training of Italian Air Force fighter pilots, and the Representation and Elaboration System (RES) Product Suite, a 3D environment for the acquisition and visualisation of flight data, both in real time and off-line, to support various applications.
Multimedia radio communications
Ideal in emergency situations, multimedia radio communications have been used by the Italian Armed Forces in numerous foreign peace missions. .
Law enforcement support systems
In this sector Elsag Datamat has developed various support systems for investigative and intelligence activities. Major projects include Investigation and Intelligence Support Systems for the Italian Carabinieri, the information system for the Italian Schengen Unit, the Europol information system and the Italian Europol unit information system. Elsag Datamat also develops investigation, intelligence and crisis management support systems for the Algerian Police Force, in addition to leading ballistic investigation solutions based on IBIS technology, through an exclusive agreement with Canadian Forensic Technology Inc.

For Elsag Datamat space is a strategic, expanding market that offers high added value. Activities in this sector can promote the development of products and services through innovative technology and the exploration of new horizons. The main activities include the design, development and integration of in-flight software; satellite control and simulation, and earth observation data management. Elsag Datamat works in the sector on its own account and through subsidiary Space Software Italia.
Space segment
Elsag Datamat's on-board software skills focus on satellite orbit and attitude control, navigation, satellite data management, unmanned vehicles, the International Space Station (ISS), and payload and telecommunications management. Specifically, Elsag Datamat has contributed to the European Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) programme and the VEGA series of small launchers, leveraging experience acquired working on the HERMES space shuttle programme.
Control centres
Elsag Datamat has developed the control centres for all Italian satellites (ITALSAT 1 & 2, SIRIO 1 & 2, SAX, SICRAL), as well as for the new Italian COSMO-SkyMed programme, a constellation of four dual purpose earth observation satellites. On international markets Elsag Datamat has worked with ESA/ESOC to develop the control centres for ARTEMIS, XMM, Cryosat and GOCE. The company is currently engaged in the development of control centres for the ADM/Aeolus and Lisa/PathFinder missions, both based on the ESA SCOS 2000 kernel.
Ground Infrastructure
For ENVISAT, the world's largest earth observation satellite, Elsag Datamat has developed the entire User Services infrastructure to access data and telemeasurement products. At the present time Elsag Datamat is providing ongoing assistance for the Payload Data Segment Operation Team, in addition to maintenance, updating and engineering for the Earth Observation Payload Data Systems operated by ESA (a four-year programme).
Multi-Mission User Services
Elsag Datamat has developed User Services based on a Multi-Mission approach in view of the range and variety of catalogues currently available and to provide user access to different catalogues. The company is also contributing to the ODISSEO programme (Open Distributed Information Systems and Services in Earth Observation), which acts as an interface for current and future remote measurement satellites, as well as being involved in projects to harmonise the data collected in the framework of the GMES programme.
Simulation and Modelling
Elsag Datamat developed the simulators for the SAX, SICRAL and Atlantic Bird satellites, as well as for the COSMO-Skymed constellation simulator. At the present time Elsag Datamat is developing the simulator for the SICRAL 1B satellite, based on the European Space Agency's SIMSAT simulation infrastructure. Elsag Datamat has also contributed to the development of satellite simulators for various ESA missions including Venus Express, Mars Express and Herschel/Planck.
